My buddy, the Leather Tiger, ex-Marine George Adams, came to see Swami Nitty-Gritty.

His legs were swollen with edema.

Swami Nitty-Gritty did some preliminary work on George in a recliner chair.

Then he instructed me to hold George’s feet.

He told me to push George’s toes in the direction of his head – foot dorsiflexion, like taking your foot off a gas pedal.

He told me to gently push George’s toes together – foot inversion, the opposite of Charlie Chaplin toes-out foot eversion.

Heencouraged George to yawn and stretch.

George’s legs shrunk down to normal in less than 10 minutes.

I’ve done this many times since. :)

Blood pressure is measured in terms of hydraulics, but hydraulic pressure (liquid pressure) is subordinate to pneumatic pressure (gas pressure) – as any Kriya Yogi or plumber knows.

ADWV (drain-waste-vent) system uses a stack vent (stink pipe) to maintain NEUTRAL PRESSURE in a plumbing system.

This DWV mechanism prevents high pressure in a drainage system – as it does inyour human body.

There’s only 2 stink pipes to vent gasout ofyour body -your MOUTH and your ANUS.

Swami Nitty-Gritty commented, “The body could’ve come with a hinged toenail to let the pressure out, but a surgical de-clenching release valve is impractical because the blood would escape by gravity flow. It’s more practical to yawn and fart and burp.”

Kriya Yoga starts with fancy yawning – yawning with a Ph.D.

    Hi Atom,

I just would like to note that the idea of gas accumulating in the body is akin to Ayurvedic principle of “Vatta” or Air dis-ballance. Vatta principle covers both Air and Ether, the last one being a higher form of air, something of a higher non-physical realm. Prana or chi, also has the nature of air (more in the direction of Ether) When moving freely, it allows body to function optimally.

The first thing that brings about Vatta disballance (increased Vatta) is the Emotional stress and anxiety, something you would call “being under pressure” What this basically means that the air gets stuck inside of organs and the Prana channels. When air gets stuck it is like an deep inhaling a power lifter makes to pick up heavy weight, this air mobilizes a body and mind to fight, flee and perform.

Nobody ever, yawns under pressure of needing to act, to produce, to preform to actively solve problems, so I 100% agree with you that yawning is critical in making the much needed “exhale” that discharges the air. Maybe you could also say that many animals such as toads, snakes, tropical fish inflate themselves when under threat, sucking air in, hardening their normally elastic bodies.

What I would like to ask though, is the relaxation techniques. When yawning is taking place, relaxation is already ongoing. However, how do you get to the state of starting to yawn in the first place? You and Patrick touched it lightly a few times that ones needs to start opening mouth, pretending, and this starts the process of natural yawning, correct? I am not totally convinced, it seems unnatural to pretend to yawn when your natural state is of excitement, emotional pressure etc.

Most peoples way to get the out of state of stress is eating, which does not start to move air for sure. What I propose is prayer, singing and slow dancing. What is you take on this?

      Good insights! :)

I’d like to elaborate on this when I’m on Patrick’s show tomorrow morning (June 6, 2011).

Ether is not a “wind” – it’s SONICS.

The 5 vayus (winds) or 5 vatas (life forces) are …

      (1) prana vata,

      (2) udana vata,

      (3) vyana vata,

      (4) samana vata, and

      (5) apana vata.

Prana vata has a lot to do with acoustics, and directly associates with the thyroid, parathyroid, and ultimobranchial glands.

Prayer, meditation, singing, poetry reading (a brain balancer), and free-form dancing (fast or slow) are excellent ways to equilibrate the vayus.

Free-form dancing is the healthiest type of dancing – one of the reasons Sufi veil dancing is so beneficial.

My Sufi teacher Adnan Sarhan says, “There’s no one-two, one-two in Sufi.”

You’ll find an example of Nahari (Tamsin Murray) veil dancing to the beat of Adnan’s drum on YouTube.

Adnan’s annual 2-month-long (plus) summer Sufi Camp in the mountains of New Mexico begins on July 1st.

Belly fat – mostly cellular bloat combined with minor extracellular bloat – can be yawned away. :)

Abdominal massage (Ampuku) while yawning helps.

Reverse Russian twists for the obliques and the “forgotten ab exercise” – vacuums – help.

And don’t forget the importance of “eating in time” – Chronobiotic Nutrition. :)

WHAT is put in the mouth WHEN is paramount – I’ve seen an abdomen expand outward and forward 4 inches in 5 minutes after the first bite of a meal was put in a friend’s mouth.

I didn’t believe it till the first time I saw it.

Some blame it in fat around the organs .?

Re: Have you written about how to do this?

    Extensively.

    I’m looking for a publisher. :)

Yawning is both voluntary and involuntary.

Involuntary yawning is the highest form of Kundalini Yoga.

In the words of Swami Nitty-Gritty, “I hate to be crude, but Kundalini is a hard-on in the tongue.”

Yoga RECYCLING – with techniques like the Cat Pose and isotonic joint-angle contraction – equilibrates gas pressure.

A bloated liver is often associated with a bloated belly.

Bloat itself is a legitimate disease of animals, yet I know of no human being ever diagnosed with plain and simple “bloat.”

Exception to the rule: Our patriarchal medical establishment allows women to have “premenstrual bloat.”

Cellular bloat is different from gastrointestinal bloat.

Someone with gastrointestinal bloat will usually get a bellyache and make an effort to change their ways.

Someone with cellular bloat will not know how to make an effort because its cause is not part of our cultural paradigm.

I’m out to change that. :)
