Ethoxyquin is not just being used to prevent Yellow Fat Disease in both live fish and dead ones (fish meat).

It’s used extensively to preserve the color in herbs and as a preservative for the food fed to pigs, chickens, cattle, and household pets (dogs and cats).

Gay Browne (“Think Pet Food Companies Are Telling Tall Tales and Making Your Dog Food Decision Rough?,” The Huffington Post, Jul. 20, 2011) wrote …

“Ethoxyquin is another preservative that is has questionable effects on humans and pets. Although it is still legal to use in both pet food and even some human-grade foods, there are concerns with how it interacts with the liver and it has been known to cause mutations in fish.”

Richard Chille (Pet Health—The Shocking Truth, The Disgusting Lies-Exposed!, 2011) wrote …

“Many dogs have died from cancer with foods containing Ethoxyquin and some of the manufacturers don’t even list it on the package. Only under much investigation will they admit it. Ethoxyquin is a preservative in the most popular brands of dog food including, ANF, NutriMax, Hills Prescription Diet, Nutro, Purina, IAMS, Royal Canin and so on. Some manufacturers are quick to label their foods ‘All natural formula’ with no preservatives but then list Ethoxyquin as an antioxidant which they claim to be safe.

“Earlier I mentioned a letter written by one Veterinarian to another about growing up and seeing a change in disease and how long dogs are living. Well here is a little more of what she had to say about this nasty preservative Ethoxyquin.

“She also mentioned Monsanto, the company that makes Ethoxyquin. She writes, ‘Some of the most damning information regarding Ethoxyquin comes from Monsanto’s own cautionary warnings in using and handling this product.’ She says Monsanto warns that it may cause allergic skin reactions and irritation to the eyes and skin. Monsanto advises that workers must wear eye and respiratory protection. The container it comes in has a skull and crossbones logo with POISON written in capital letters. This preservative found in our pet’s food is listed as a hazardous chemical according to the OSHA hazard communication standard.”

Do fish get Yellow Fat Disease?

    The answer is YES.

Fish are prone to Yellow Fat Disease too!

For example, at the Fish and Wildlife Service in Kearneysville, West Virginia …

Fresh beef spleen was removed from the diet (fresh beef spleen, fresh beef liver, dry feeds, wheat middlings, yeast, sodium chloride) of fingerling rainbow trout, and replaced by “11.1 parts of fish meal.’

The result was subnormal growth, high mortality, and pigment “scattered throughout the spleen.”
