Swami Nitty-Gritty (Adano Ley)

Adano Ley and Atom Bergstrom in 1988Adano Christopher Ley (like a true Sagittarius Fire Sign) was born in a burning house owned by his mostly Asian parents in South America.

His father was Mongolian and his mother was one-half Southern Chinese, one-quarter Spanish, and one-quarter Carib Indian.

Adano went to school for one day, deciding, “They can’t teach me what I want to learn,” and went to work as a tailor.

He traveled to New York, where he mostly worked for RCA (plus odd jobs like working for Jack Dempsey the boxer.

Transferring to Canada, he continued his job with RCA until he fell off a roof, recuperating in a hospital for one year and nine months.

Adano discovered and experimented with Solar Nutrition during his extended confinement in a full-body cast, thanks to the cooperation of the hospital administrator.

The American C.I.A. was involved, but no one seems to know how much or in what way.

Crossing the border into Mexico during a snowstorm, the border guard proclaimed, “Quetzalcoatl has returned!”

Adano was officially made a Swami a few years before I met him and became his friend and student for fourteen years.

He often told us, “The teacher is not above the student, and the student is not above the teacher. It is enough that they be friends.”

Adano’s official Swami name was Nityananda Saraswati, but he preferred to be called Swami Nitty-Gritty, because he “got down to the real nitty-gritty.”

Miracles followed him as a matter of course, but he preferred to call them “the cosmetics of the actual experience.”

He was the Kit Carson of the Aquarian Age.

Ask any of his students or friends exactly who or what Adano was, and you’ll get as many different answers as he had students and friends.

When asked who or what he was, he once replied, “I am nothing but a figment in the imagination of Paramahansa Yogananda.”

Pursued for details, he answered, “I am the wallpaper.”

I preferred to think of Adano as “I am the walrus.” “I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.”

When he finally went on his Cosmic Vacation, his body smelled strongly of roses, just as he had predicted.

His brown eyes also turned to blue, just as he had also predicted.

Adano also said that he was “turning into a blond-haired, blue-eyed Oriental,” and there were reports of such space aliens shortly after he left.

His typical Asian brown eyes really did turn blue in the body he left us with, something I know for sure because I was his iridologist.

Ah!! to be blessed with the life of a master!! I had one in the physical in Sai Baba but not as interesting as 14 years following someone around and living with them, although I found out when I got in trouble and Swami bailed me out, that he was always closer than my shadow.. but the conditioned mind puts separation between the beloved and the be-loved… they are here to make us remember who we are…. as in the dream I forget all the time… be blessed Atom!!

Gebi, you’re one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met. The presence of the Masters is present in your presence. :)

Hahahaha and sniff sniff. A beautiful and true tribute and report. I worked in Adano’s clinic as a cook for 6 years and travelled with him cooking for his workshops in Solar Nutrition for another 4 years. On my off days I was a colonic therapist in his clinic. He never stopped being Mentor, and his humility and humor were his lifestyle. He always had us students cracking up!

Christina operates the only Solar Nutrition restaurant in the entire world.

How many revolutions around the Sun has it been?

You may have read about cooks and chefs whose cooking is “to die for.”

      Christina’s cooking is “to LIVE for.” :) :) :)

Bergstrom, You prove the old adage ‘never judge a book by its cover.’ If as strangers our paths had crossed in a dark alley, instinct would have inspired me to unsnap the safety strap on the sheath of my Bowie knife. You have seriously crazy eyes. Hah, it was decreed whilst in the womb or maybe even before that you were destined to become an iridologist (amongst other things). Your testimonial and tribute were worthy of the Swami Nityanada Saraswati. Selah.

A former girlfriend actually thought I was an alien from outer space.

She kept trying to get me to ‘fess up and admit it.

I lived next door to Adano for about three years in Houston. He had a double-apartment that shared a common wall with mine..
He converted the huge outdoor patios we had into a large dining hall by roofing it over with fiberglass panels.

I often partook of his daily Macrobiotic feasts. I never partook of the colonic therapy or much of the spiritualism. I had no idea till almost 20 years later how important he was

We might have met. I lived on the second floor above Adano while going to his Texas Institute of Reflex Sciences, and one of my roommates (when I lived in another apartment across the way) built the Banana Grove Restaurant in Adano’s patio, where I ate hundreds of meals.
