The Systemic Toxicity of Aluminum 

Dr. Christopher Exley is the Reader in Bioinorganic Chemistry at The Birchall Centre, Keele University in Staffordshire and Honorary Professor at the UHI Millennium Institute. Exley is a biologist (University of Stirling) with a PhD in the ecotoxicology of aluminium (University of Stirling). His research career (1984-present) has focused upon an intriguing paradox; ‘how the third most abundant element of the Earth’s crust (aluminium) is non-essential and largely inimical to life’. Investigating this mystery has required research in myriad fields from the basic inorganic chemistry of the reaction of aluminium and silicon to the potentially complex biological availability of aluminium in humans. Exley is also fascinated by the element silicon in relation to living things which, as the second most abundant element of the Earth’s crust, is also almost devoid of biological function. One possible function of silicon is to keep aluminium out of biology (biota) and this area of study forms a large part of Exley’s research.

The earth’s crust is mostly made of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen.  Aluminum is locked up in the rocks, but burning the rocks plus mining operations are releasing the aluminum into the air.  Aluminum in the atmosphere is causing acid rain.  Man has changed the balance.  We are in the Aluminum Age.

Acid rain started with the industrial revolution, but the biggest cause is that aluminum ores have been turned into aluminum salts.  A very successful metal in bringing us modern life.

Aluminum has many different properties leading to many different functions.  Started use in vaccines 100 years ago when researchers were looking for a way to enhance the immune response, which was achieved by combining aluminum salt with the antigen – i.e. aluminum as an adjuvant.  Aluminum produces local toxicity at the reaction site.  80% of vaccines use an aluminum adjuvant.  The amount of aluminum in a vaccine is a  very, very small amount, but it’s applied to a very, very small area, the injection site.  Some individuals are very sensitive to aluminum adjuvants.  Local damage can become more extensive, can produce brain damage.

Mercury was added as a preservative to vaccinations.  Prevented microbial growth.  No synergy between mercury and aluminum; they are added for different purposes.

Mercury should not be in any vaccine, nor in the teeth.  People rarely have an acute exposure to aluminum, but it is accumulating in our bodies and our brains over time.  We’re delaying a response until later life.

We don’t know the cause of most chronic disease.  Genetics and individual environment play a role.  Individuals respond differently to an individual toxin like aluminum.

Is there a connection to Alzheimer’s?  Yes.  Without aluminum in the brain, there wouldn’t be Alzheimer’s Disease.  This contention is not accepted by governments or charities.

Pandora’s Box dilemma – we use aluminum in so many ways, we would have an economic collapse if we stopped using it.  It’s in the air.  But we can use it more safely.

Governments are complacent about the dangers of aluminum.  Silicon protects against the toxicity, so for individual protection, drink a liter a day of a mineral water with a lot of soluble silicon.  3 brands of silicon-rich mineral waters – Fiji Water in US, Spritzer from Malaysia, Volvic in England.

Silicon supplements are not the same thing.  Don’t dissolve to give soluble silicon.  Haven’t been able to find a product to add to water and make silicic acid, the soluble form of silicon.

Keep aluminum as low as possible as long as possible.

Don’t cook anything where the juices come in direct contact with aluminum foil and corrode it.  Using foil to cover a roast is okay.

To get rid of aluminum toxicity, drink Fiji water.  The levels of plastics from a plastic bottle is miniscule.

Will magnesium malate pull aluminum from the brain or body?  Never any research to prove it, but magnesium will be helpful against aluminum toxicity.  Aluminum exerts it’s toxicity by replacing magnesium.

Do coal-fired plants emit aluminum?  The amount of aluminum in the air isn’t as great as you imagine.  Maybe in very, very polluted air.  It’s mainly in food and everyday life.  Used in processed foods as part of the processing, e.g. aluminum in cake mixes, baking powder.  An E number means it has aluminum in it.

Why do some people get Alzheimer’s Disease?   Genetic differences predispose some to accumulate aluminum in the brain or  have difficulty detoxing it.
